Project Dandelion is the BSF Public Art programme for the City of Wolverhampton. Dandelion will create opportunities and exposure for the best of contemporary visual and performance artists through a highly visible and high profile public art project in Wolverhampton.
Opportunities will include atrium pieces, event-led activity, exhibitions, indoor and outdoor commissions, small and large scale. This is a dynamic and ambitious programme of Public Art in schools that will work with and promote artists and art of the highest quality. As well as being commissioned to design, create and install the artwork varying degrees of consultation and participation will be required. This will be designed in collaboration with each individual artist and will be tailored to be project and commission specific.
We are building a stable/pool of artists who work principally within the field of Public Art. We are creating opportunities for artists that work in photography, film, video, painting, sculpture, glass, metal, wood and other media, based in the UK. Opportunities will also be developed for performing artists to include live art, theatre, music and literature, although these will be fewer.
Selection to the stable/pool is no guarantee of being commissioned. The opportunity is time limited as the stable/pool will be operational until summer 2012, at which point we will wish to refresh the submissions.
If you are successful we will notify you by email. Unfortunately, we will not be unable to contact artists who are unsuccessful.
Project Dandelion is working with 16,000 pupils, across 23 secondary schools over four phases over 4 years as part of Building Schools for the Future in Wolverhampton. Our budget is being provided by Carillion as a per cent for art scheme and the schools, Wolverhampton City Council will be the owners the work at the end of the project.
If you are a professional artist based in the UK please send the following information on a CD Rom (please no email submissions) in order to be considered:
1. Artists Statement no more than 500 words (hard copy and on CD)
2. CV, that includes education, track record, commission and exhibition history (hard copy and on CD)
3. 15 images of your work drawn from a maximum of 5 projects/commissions (sent as 10” X 8” X 300 DPI, JPEG files)
4. Web site address and complete contact information (hard copy and on CD)
5. Indication of commission fees/prices (hard copy and on CD)
Deadline WEDNESDAY 8TH DECEMBER 2010.
Please send to Nicola Shipley, 302 The Custard Factory, Gibb Street, Digbeth, Birmingham B9 4AA

CANADIAN CHILDREN'S BOOK SPARKS BROADWAY ARTS FESTIVAL
John Singer Sargent’s 1887 painting of two girls lighting paper lanterns in a garden at twilight has long been one of the artist’s best-loved works. Canadian children’s author Hugh Brewster decided to tell the story behind its creation in a book entitled Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose: The Story of a Painting, (Kids Can Press.) The book was nominated for a 2007 Governor General's Award and selected as one of the best children’s books of the year by the Washington Post.
On a visit to the village of Broadway, Worcestershire, where the book is set, Brewster suggested to local art dealer John Noott, that the village should have a festival to celebrate the remarkable colony of artists (Sargent, Henry James, Laurence Alma-Tadema, Frank Millet and others) who once lived there. “I suggested that I’d write a play adaptation of Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose to be performed right where it happened 125 years before,” Brewster recalls.
Next month, a gala performance of Brewster’s play will launch the first Broadway Arts Festival on Friday 11th June 2010. The village will be decorated with thousands of lanterns and an exhibition of works by Sargent and other members of the Broadway colony will be opened by Sargent’s great-nephew, art historian Richard Ormond. For the following ten days there will be talks by Sargent scholars, theatre, music, guided walks and a flower festival. See www.broadwayartsfestival.com for further information.
“It’s thrilling to see all this become a reality,” says Brewster. “The festival will be a biennial event and there are few places lovelier than the Cotswold hills in June”.

Robert James, a local photographer creates colour images that concentrate on the meeting of artificial environments with nature. Robert looks particularly at the effects of the quarrying industry in his work. Capturing open spaces used in everyday lives, Robert’s photographs reveal an alternative view of the local scenery.

How to Look at French Impressionist Paintings Course at Farncombe Estate
How to Look at French Impressionist Paintings with Alice Foster
Today, images by Monet, Renoir and their contemporaries are usually viewed with affection and ease but we forget that in the 1870s when these paintings were first shown, they were treated with suspicion and derision. It was a time of experimenting with new artificial colours and new paint brushes. New subject matter challenged the traditional. Alice Foster leads this study day, exploring the avant garde nature of the Impressionists; she demonstrates the reasons why they were considered to be so strange at the time and the effect they had on the Modern Movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
If you are interested in attending this course then please contact Mandy, Nikki or Charley on 01386 854 100 or e-mail enquiries@farncombeestate.co.uk

Juliet Heslewood - Lecture at Farncombe Estate is the subject of her new book!
Juliet Heslewood studied for her first degree at London University and later gained her MA from Toulouse. For over 25 years she lived in France where she devised and led study tours on art and architecture as well as continuing her writing career. Her books include ‘The History of Western Painting’ and its companion on Sculpture – both for young people – which were translated into twelve languages. She has a new book out now, the subject of another popular lecture which she gives at Farncombe: “Mother: Portraits by 40 Great Artists”. From Rembrandt, Rossetti and Van Gogh to Picasso, Kahlo and Hockney, forty portraits make up this collection of atists’ mothers. A delicious combination of art history and biographical anecdote, it is also an elegant celebration of the powerful relationships between sons, daughters and their mothers.
Juliet will be happy to sign copies of her new book, when students attend her lecture at Farncombe Estate on the 29/03/2009 - copies will be available to purchase
