Gloucestershire Rural Community Council recently launched Gloucestershire Vibrant Village of the Year 2010 with entry forms and letters sent out to all rural parishes in the county. This competition is an opportunity for villages to showcase the important and innovative work they do and GRCC is looking for communities that are balanced, proactive, caring and, irrespective of size, making the best of local opportunities to sustain or enhance the quality of life for all their residents. The competition is open to villages with a parish council or parish meeting and a total population of less than 3,500. Parishes will be judged on four categories: Best Community Facility, Best Community Project/Initiative, Most Resilient Community and Healthy & Active Community and the deadline for return is Tuesday 4th May 2010.
After the judging visits have taken place in May and June, entrants will be invited to the awards ceremony at the beautiful Rococo Gardens in Painswick, Stroud on 15th July 2010, where the achievements of those who have taken part will be celebrated and the winners announced. A cheque for £500 together with a framed commemorative certificate will be awarded to the overall winner as well as to each of the individual category winners. Runners up will each receive a cheque for £100 and other awards may be presented at the judges' discretion. All entries will also be entered into the Grand Prize Draw with the chance to win a gift voucher kindly donated by B&Q in Gloucester.
We are fortunate this year to be able to enjoy the continued additional sponsorship of NHS Gloucestershire, together with Gloucestershire's Safer and Stronger Communities Partnership and are also pleased to welcome a new sponsor, The Honourable Company of Gloucestershire.
GRCC's Chief Executive, Lesley Archer said, "We are hoping that this year, communities who may not have entered in the past, make the most of the shorter, simplified form and tell us about the great things they are doing for their community." She added, "We are also thrilled to welcome the Honourable Company of Gloucestershire as new sponsors."
For more information on the competition or to obtain an entry form and a copy of the insights document giving hints and tips from previous winners, please contact Naomi McMahon at GRCC on 01452 528491 or follow the link.
We run weekend leisure courses throughout the year. Adult Education is at the heart of Farncombe. Set in 320 acres of beautiful Cotswold countryside we also offer optional ensuite B&B accommodation.

Team building and community development though learning to sing
Tutor Dan Evans writes:
Doubtless many choirs and singing groups bring people together and help to form friendships and communities. Singing is enjoyable, good for you and sociable in all sorts of ways. Everyone Can Sing voice workshop however goes further than this – as well as the sociable aspects of singing, my workshop actively builds teams and communities. Confidence is key in singing and my coaching process was designed to develop confidence. A by-product of this process is highly effective team building and community development.
Confidence is key in singing – weather it’s singing powerfully, hitting high notes or presenting moving songs – it’s important to feel confident in order to sing well. My Everyone Can Sing voice workshop deploys my ‘engine’, which develops confidence through the reinforcement of existing (and developing) strengths. Participants grow in confidence by receiving positive feedback from myself as the tutor but also, importantly, from the other participants.
In giving positive feedback, participants show each other respect, differences are celebrated and competitiveness vanishes – everyone encourages everyone else to succeed. This creates a motivating and exciting ambience, in which I can gently challenge limiting beliefs and help participants to achieve their full potential at that time. Participants frequently progress more than they would have thought possible and are often moved by the experience, which is memorable for them. Participants not only feel more confident but they also they also develop a more optimistic and positive outlook.
In showing respect, celebrating differences, removing competitiveness and working in a positive, motivating and exciting ambience, barriers come down, friendships are formed, teams are built and communities develop.

New Farncombe workshops - Art in Action 2010
Art in Action welcomes approximately 24,000 people over four days each July. Visitors come
to learn, buy and enjoy, the exhibitions, classes and performances of 400 demonstrating artists, designer makers, teachers, musicians and performers.
“Art in Action is in a different league - not just because it is bigger, but because it's better” Demonstrating artist
2010 Highlights:
A new marquee showcasing International Art and featuring work from Turkey, India,
Spain, the USA, Russia, Thailand, China, Australia and Zimbabwe. The artists work
across a number of disciplines including stone carving, marbelling, jewellery, miniature boxes and textiles. We are especially delighted to welcome Bruce Rogers, a Didgeridoo maker, performer and teacher who is regarded as one of the best in Australia
The One Oak Project. Three demonstrators will all be using wood from the same tree felled at Blenheim in January. Mike Ward will be smoking charcoal each day, Irving Rodas will be making furniture and Martin Damen will be making spoons and bowls, both
from green wood. The organiser Andrew Purves intends to have all the demonstrators in
2011 using wood from the same oak
Following on from their challenge in 2009 to produce a work inspired by TS Eliot’s poem The Four Quartets, the ceramicists will be examining where inspiration comes from and how it’s translated into artistic form, and bringing visuals to help them as well as including it in their discussions with the public. Curator Sherry Moran hopes this will allow the artists to share a deeper aspect to their work
Photographer Nick Fleming will give a series of lectures based on his extensive experience photographing spiritual communities in Northern India and will also give
advice on how to improve your photography
Winner of the Best of the Best 2009 Roanna Wells whose work is an exploration of the
fine line between contemporary drawing and textile art. She will be demonstrating her technique of drawing with thread to explore their relationship
Farncombe Estate will be offering a series of workshops daily – for more details visit www.FarncombeEstate.co.uk/ArtinAction2010
Staged in the grounds of Waterperry House, Oxfordshire, artists set up their studios in one of the many marquees. They work in front of visitors, giving them the rare opportunity to observe the creative process at first hand.

and Printmaking, Ceramics, Calligraphy and Illustration, Glass, Metalwork and Jewellery,
Textiles and Woodwork. We are delighted to welcome a new section, International Art,
featuring artists from around the world working in numerous disciplines.
One of the many unique features of Art in Action is the large selection of practical classes on offer. There are opportunities for approximately 4000 visitors to take a class in a wide and eclectic number of subjects from mosaic making for 3-7 yrs to Japanese style bookmaking for the over 16s. Half of the classes are run by some of the UK’s most prestigious and established colleges and institutions, including the Drawing School of the New English Art Club, West Dean College, the Prince’s School of Traditional Art and the Guild of Glass Engravers. A number of classes can be booked in advance online (www.artinaction.org.uk), but demand is high. Following a class, enthusiasts can purchase art materials and publications to refine their skills or just get started. There is also the Craft Market where more than 100 designer-makers sell quality goods.
In addition, Art in Action offers fine music, performing artists and storytelling for children.
There are lectures organised by NADFAS (National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies) and visitors can take guided tours of the beautiful Waterperry gardens and the exquisite frescoes on the walls of Waterperry House that were completed in 2006 - a 10-year project. There is a wide range of refreshments: cream teas from the Pear Tree Restaurant, a good selection of wines, champagne and Pimm’s and numerous organic and artisan food stalls throughout the site. Art in Action is truly a celebration of creativity as well as a great day out for families and art lovers. People come year after year – often, they say, as much for the atmosphere as for the works on show.

Playwriting Course - Oxford
The emphasis of this course is in producing work and then sending it to theatre companies and entering competitions. Although there is no heavy emphasis on access to the Internet some reference will be made to Internet sites.
What are the difficulties that playwrights face? Typically they are more on the motivation and organisational side than the actual skill of playwriting.
This course will provide the motivation and through peer feedback and maximum participation from the students and tutor everyone will be able to develop their plays – and, hopefully, find a market.
It must be emphasised that this course is 100% practical. Students will be expected to regularly contribute work and to give feedback to others
Fee: £99 for 9 weeks
Venue: Oxford
Dates: 15 April - 17 June 2010
Details: http://www.chimera-studios.co.uk/playwriting-course/
The tutor is unpaid. Any surplus will be ploughed back to the class members.

Everyone Can Sing?! Singing course at Farncombe leads student to a recording opportunity!
19-year old Andrea Ebrey attended Dan Evans' voice workshop at Farncombe Estate this February, not really knowing if she had a voice, or not. She took an active part in the exercises but it was not until the Saturday evening that Andrea showed her true potential. After class, the group were singing informally in the bar and suddenly Andrea’s voice filled the room and stopped everyone in their tracks - it was quite moving. Dan invited her down to his hometown of Olney to meet popular songwriter and producer Barnaby Pinny.
As a result of that meeting, Andrea has put down a couple of tracks. Dan feels that her voice is strong and true and she clearly has a career as a singer.
To read more about Dan and his workshops at Farncombe visit www.FarncombeEstate.co.uk/DanEvans

Happy Easter from Farncombe !
Recessions are supposed to be 'good times' for encouraging some reflection and thought about how we lead our lives and so on. I have no idea if that is true today, but I am certain that Peter and Emma Worley's weekend at the end of May on 'Philosophy & Happiness: What the Ancients Could Still Do for Us' will be fascinating, will make one think, and remind us how much has been usefully thought about for centuries. Incidentally, Peter and Emma are themselves interesting. They run philosophy based courses in schools, from primary level up. Young pupils suddenly discover that what you can think can be as important and exciting as what you can remember. Teachers can learn how to ask questions!
Last week Farncombe was at the Country Living Spring Fair at the Design Centre in London for five days. It is a big show and this was our first time there. We had terrific support from tutors with Craft Workshops run by Sue Hazell (Sewing), Sara Withers (Jewellery making), Angie Sayer (Ceramics), Lyn Griffiths (Felting), Debbie Siniska (Rag-rugs) and Charlie Lupton (Willow weaving). Julia Baker (Massage and aromatherapy), Andrew Forkner (Animal portraits) and Judith Laing (Origami) also spent a day demonstrating on our stand. We found lots of interest in our courses and I am hopeful the Fair will bring new students to Farncombe. We also met up with students who have already enjoyed courses at Farncombe, which was great.
Spring has very nearly arrived here. The daffodils are coming out and the dawn chorus is building up in volume but we are still some way from most trees coming seriously into bud, next month ..........
Meanwhile there is plenty of mud to be cleaned out of a horse's hooves at the end of a ride, and I am very happy to clean them. In time we will get to hard, dry, leg jarring ground, and summer sun!
