How to Look at French Impressionist Paintings with Alice Foster
Today, images by Monet, Renoir and their contemporaries are usually viewed with affection and ease but we forget that in the 1870s when these paintings were first shown, they were treated with suspicion and derision. It was a time of experimenting with new artificial colours and new paint brushes. New subject matter challenged the traditional. Alice Foster leads this study day, exploring the avant garde nature of the Impressionists; she demonstrates the reasons why they were considered to be so strange at the time and the effect they had on the Modern Movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
